About Our Skin
The skin has three layers:
1. The epidermis is the outer layer of our skin which provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. Our skin’s colour is created by special cells called melanocytes, which produce the pigment melanin. Melanocytes are located in the epidermis
2. The dermis is beneath the epidermis and contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands
3. The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissues
Skin Types
Knowing your skin type will help you understand which products will suit and improve your skins look, feel, tone and complexion.
Normal Skin
Normal skin has a good balance of moisture, small pores and an even tone and is the goal for most people. Normal skin feels comfortable, soft and translucent and has the best balance of oil to water with a smooth texture appearance and no visible blemishes or pores. It will be soft to the touch with no dry flaky or greasy areas.
Oily Skin
Oily skin is classified by the overproduction of sebum (oil). It has distinctly larger follicles or pores than other skin types and these are visible over the entire face. Due to the overproduction of oil, the skin is usually shiny and is prone to blackheads, spots and acne. Hormones affect the oil production in your skin so anything that changes your hormone levels can affect your skin.
Dry Skin
Dry skin can feel tight and often has dry patches and flaking and there can be a loss of skin tone, broken capillaries and ashen complexion. Pores can appear smaller, the skin appears dull, often on the cheeks and around the eyes and forehead. Dry skin can be uncomfortable and cause itching and cracking. Dry skin can affect any part of your body and can happen at any time.
Combination Skin
Combination skin is most common in adults and is a combination of oily and dry skin. Most people have symptoms of oily skin along their T-zone which the area encompassing the forehead, nose, and chin. It is possible to have both oily and dry skin and man oily skin types can be producing oil in the pores, but still, be dry on the surface. dry skin can be the result of overuse of high concentration surface exfoliants that are addressing blocked pores which is often a treatment for oily skin.
Dehydrated Skin
Dehydrated skin can appear dry but it’s not the same as having dry skin. The skin can feel rough and coarse to the touch and fine dehydration lines can appear. It can make your skin feel tight with a loss of skin tone, broken capillaries and give an ashen complexion. Dehydrated skin is relatively easy to treat with the right lifestyle changes and products.
Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin can be caused by a range of conditions, from genetic ailments such as rosacea and eczema to more severe allergies. Many people can have an allergic or sensitive reaction from a product or ingredient but if you have persistent issues then it is classified as sensitive skin and the products you use are key to having bright and healthy looking skin.
