Botox and Botox Injections Bristol
If you are you considering botox and Botox and Botox Injections in Bristol then this article explains everything you need to know to ensure you decide if botox, also known as muscle relaxing treatment is for you.
So what is Botox?
Botox is actually a drug brand prepared from botulin, which is an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic.
Botulinum toxin is a material that has been known for over a century and has been used for medical purposes for more than 50 years. Its initial uses were for lazy eye (strabismus), blepharospasm (inability to move the eyelids in certain ways), and wryneck (cervical dystonia).
It was approved in 2002 for improving and relaxing frown lines in the area (the glabella) between the eyes, on the forehead, and has been used successfully in more than over 11 million people since that time. Botox was also approved in 2004 for excess sweating (hyperhidrosis), and in 2010 it was approved for the treatment of migraine headaches.
Muscle relaxing injections are becoming more and more common as we strive to keep ourselves looking fresh, young and wrinkle-free. The injections will remove fine lines and soften wrinkles. Specifically, the procedure helps to smooth away frown lines, forehead lines, bunny lines, crows feet, lip lines, marionette lines, sad smile lines, dimpled chin, platysmal bands and shapes eyebrows.
How do muscle relaxing treatments work?
Muscle relaxant minimises the signals from the nerves to the muscles to reduce it contracting, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. When you have muscle relaxant injections it blocks the signal transmission at the nerve junctions to the facial muscles, thus relaxing them. A muscle relaxing treatment is typically aimed at partial muscle blockage, to relax facial muscles without stiffening them, allowing for a natural facial expression. When the facial muscles are minimised with a muscle relaxant it allows the skin over them to renew its elasticity, therefore removing fine lines and wrinkles. A muscle relaxant treatment cannot remove the appearance of excess or sagging skin and if this is something you are looking for then you may want to consider a non-surgical thread lift procedure or for more excessive excess skin then you may need to consider a surgical facelift.
What is involved in a muscle relaxant treatment?
Fine needles are used to inject the botox into specific areas to soften and minimise lines and wrinkles. You will be asked to remove any make-up before the procedure and the areas being focused on will be cleaned with antiseptic before any injections are given. Most individuals will feel mild discomfort during the treatment as the injections are done. You must tell your consultant if you are particularly concerned about this as some clinics may offer to apply a numbing cream if this is the case. The procedure only takes a few minutes so this is not always an option.
During the treatment, the doctor may ask you to make certain facial expressions to identify lines and wrinkles to better access the muscles that cause them. For the best results follow any instructions you are given carefully and remain as still as possible. A typical treatment involves a handful of injection sites carefully selected based on the results you are looking for.
You will see some results immediately and the full results will typically be seen between 4 to 14 days.

What should you do if you are considering a muscle relaxing treatment?
You should always go to a medically trained cosmetic doctor for botox or muscle relaxing injections. Although it is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment it should not be taken lightly. You need to ensure the doctor or clinic you choose is fully trained, qualified and has the experience of carrying out this procedure, so do your research carefully. Ask for recommendations from friends or family, or research your local clinics using the internet. You should expect a full and free consultation and feel under no pressure to go ahead with the treatment until you have had time to consider if it is for you. Take time before your consultation to write down any questions you may have so you don’t forget any when you are there. During your consultation, the doctor should ask you to talk to them about your full medical history and any medication you are taking. As an example botox cannot be carried out if you are taking antibiotics or if you are taking some other medication so it is really important you let them know everything you are and have been taking. The doctor should let you talk about your concerns and the areas you want to focus on. They should tell you the results you will see, any after effects and any risks so you are really clear about the procedure. Always ask them to show you before and after photos of their work. After your consultation, if you haven’t already done so, look for reviews for the doctor you are considering using the internet, search their name, clinic or business name as well as looking at their website.
(“Treatment success is totally reliant on having the right product in the hands of the right person. So do your homework thoroughly!”)
What are the side effects of a muscle relaxant treatment?
There isn’t normally any external indications that you have had a muscle relaxant procedure apart from the positive results, however, some patients can experience redness at the injection site and occasional mild bruising. There are steps you can take to minimise possible bruising, and these include; no longer taking blood-thinning medications like Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, and Aspirin the week prior to your procedure.
To maximize results, you are advised to avoid strenuous activity and drinking alcohol for a few days following the procedure. Medical or cosmetic procedures near or on the injection sites such as; facials, chemical peels, waxing, and the like are also best avoided.
These should all be discussed during your consultation.
